Zurich poaches tech talent from Ping An

Chinese insurer’s technology unit chief hired to boost Swiss group’s digital products

"Ping An is one of the world’s biggest insurance companies, and has become known, and envied, for its tech prowess, launching products and services that are still on the drawing board at western insurers. Ping An’s artificial-intelligence technology, for example, can use photos taken on mobile phones to assess the cost of repair for a damaged car. Zurich has decided to give itself some of that expertise by hiring Ericson Chan, the chief executive of Ping An’s technology unit. He will become chief information and digital officer at the Switzerland-based insurer. “Ericson has created Ping An Technology, which is a brilliant enterprise,” said Mario Greco, Zurich’s chief executive. “He has experience in creating the connectivity . . . with the customers.”
