Why every digital transformer needs a lavatory brush nearby

35% of costs in construction result from waste materials and time. Digital transformation can both improve outputs & customer satisfaction and strip out unnecessary costs.

I have no idea if Carillion ever tried digital transformation ( looks too focused on cash flow for that) but if ever you needed a reminder that goals, strategies, organisation, people skills, structure, business models, contracting and procurement all need transforming before you can effectively digitise the organisation this is it.

Keep a lavatory brush nearby to remind you.

Contrary to popular — and populist — opinion, outsourcing is a messy business with little margin for profit. Or for error. Serco boss Rupert Soames has a lavatory brush on his desk to remind himself not to bid for work below the average cleaner’s 5-6 per cent margin. He calls it his “Shitometer”. But if former Carillion boss Richard Howson had something similar on his desk, he ignored its proximity to the fan.
